- IP55 & Wind 15 m/s – all-weather capable for industrial environments
Technical Specifications for Industrial Tasks
The DJI Matrice 30T (M30T) is a professional drone system for industrial external applications. In contrast to the ELIOS 3, which was developed for interiors (GPS-free, confined spaces), the M30T is the ideal tool for external structures and hard-to-reach elevated structures.
Key technical data:
- Zoom camera: 1/2” CMOS sensor, 48 megapixels, 5–167 mm focal length, approx. 16x optical zoom, up to 200x digital hybrid zoom – for reliable detail shots from a safe distance
- Thermal camera: 640×512 pixel infrared sensor (FLIR sensor), 8–50 mm focal length, 2x optical zoom, NETD ≤50 mK – measuring thermography for temperature anomalies
- Laser rangefinder: measurement range 3–1,200 m, ±1 m accuracy – exact positioning and distance measurement to the surface
- Protection class: IP55 – dust and jet-water protected, suitable for external use in rain and dust
- Wind resistance: up to 15 m/s (wind force 7) – operational in stronger wind conditions
- Flight time: up to 41 minutes – sufficient for complete chimney or tower documentations
- Operating temperature: −20°C to +50°C – winter deployment without restrictions
Typical External Applications in Industrial Inspection
Chimneys & Stacks (External)
Complete external documentation from base to head cap. Cracks, spalling, joint damage, head cap, lightning protection system – all in one flight. No rope access team, no scaffolding.
Wind Turbines
Tower shaft, nacelle casing, rotor blades – drone systematically covers the tower. Crack monitoring on concrete tower, coating inspection on steel tower, rotor blade condition.
External Tanks & Vessels
Outer wall corrosion, coating damage, roof fittings, connections, bund wall – supplemented thermographically with heat losses and fill-level indications for heated tanks.
Pipe Bridges & Pipe Racks
Large-area pipeline structures and pipe racks in chemical parks and refineries – corrosion on pipes, coating damage on support structures, leakage thermography.
Industrial Halls & Roofs
Hall roof inspection for leaks (thermography with temperature differential inside/outside), damage to roof covering, rooflights, ridge beams and facade cladding.
Cooling Towers (External) & Concrete Structures
External shell of natural-draught cooling towers, bridges, retaining walls and industrial structures – concrete damage, reinforcement corrosion, cracks quantified by optical zoom.
The DJI Matrice 30T – professional industrial drone for external structures. IP55, up to 41 minutes flight time, 16x optical zoom.
Thermography with the M30T: Industrial Applications
The thermal camera of the M30T (640×512 pixels, FLIR sensor) is a standalone diagnostic tool – not just a supplementary option. The following thermography applications are particularly valuable in industrial inspection:
Thermal bridges and insulation losses: Poorly insulated areas on production halls, hot water vessels and insulated pipelines are visible as hotspots in the thermal image – the basis for targeted refurbishment planning.
Electrical anomalies: Overheated cable boxes, defective fuses, contact failures in outdoor switchgear and transformers are detectable as temperature peaks – long before a failure occurs.
Process leakages: Steam pipeline leakages, leaking flanges and pressure relief valves with impermissible heat loss are detectable thermographically from a safe distance.
Moisture damage in facades and roofs: Moisture that has penetrated into insulation layers and behind facade cladding changes the thermal capacity – visible as a temperature deviation from dry areas. Particularly effective with night or dusk measurements (low solar influence).
Chimney thermography: Leaks in the chimney lining lead to uncontrolled heat emission at the outer wall. Thermography shows precisely where gas flow is occurring – even with an externally intact appearance.
M30T + ELIOS 3: Inside/Outside Inspection from One Source
The greatest strength of the Kopterflug inspection approach lies in the combination of both systems. For many industrial objects neither a purely external nor a purely internal inspection is sufficient – both are needed.

Frequently Asked Questions: DJI Matrice 30T in Industrial Inspection
What is the difference between M30T and ELIOS 3?
The M30T is designed for external structures: GPS-guided, high zoom, thermography for facades, chimneys, towers and roof areas. The ELIOS 3 is designed for confined spaces: GPS-free, collision-safe, 4K + thermography + LiDAR for tanks, boilers, silos and shafts. The combination covers all inspection scenarios comprehensively.
Is the M30T thermography camera measuring?
Yes – the M30T uses a radiometric FLIR sensor (640×512 pixels). “Measuring” means: each pixel delivers an absolute temperature value in degrees Celsius – not just relative colour information. This enables precise identification of overheating points, leakage temperatures and thermal anomalies with exact temperature values in the report.
At what distance can the M30T zoom still recognise cracks?
With 16x optical zoom: recognisable cracks from approx. 30–50 m distance, depending on crack width. Combined with the laser rangefinder for exact positioning and image sharpness. For regulatory documentation of cracks on bridges or chimneys, a flight distance of approx. 5–15 m is typically optimal for the required detail resolution.
Can the M30T fly in rain?
Yes – the M30T has IP55 protection: protected against dust and jet water. Light to moderate rain is not a problem. In strong gusts or heavy rain, a brief postponement may be advisable for optimal image quality. Operating temperature: −20°C to +50°C, so winter deployment is possible without restrictions.
How much cheaper is drone inspection compared to rope access for chimneys?
Rope access (FISAT/IRATA-certified) for chimney inspection: typically €2,000–8,000 per day, 2–5 days for a full chimney inspection. M30T drone inspection: typically 1 day on-site for visual and thermographic documentation. Cost comparison varies by chimney height and complexity, but 60–80% savings compared to rope access are achievable for pure inspection.
Does the M30T produce a 3D model?
The M30T does not have an integrated LiDAR sensor and does not create LiDAR point clouds. For 3D models of external structures, photogrammetry (structure from motion, SfM) from the M30T's 48MP zoom camera is possible – with centimetre accuracy. For confined space 3D models the ELIOS 3 with its integrated LiDAR sensor is used.
Which regulatory requirements are relevant for chimney inspection by drone?
For chimneys per BImSchG/TA Luft, inspection obligations apply depending on type (industrial chimney, house chimney) and fuel. Drone-assisted visual inspection is increasingly accepted as a supplement or replacement for conventional inspections. The regulatory acceptance depends on the specific chimney type and the responsible body. We clarify this in advance.
Can the M30T detect CUI (Corrosion Under Insulation)?
Yes – this is one of the most valuable M30T thermography applications. CUI shows up as temperature deviations at the insulation surface: wet insulation has different thermal properties to dry insulation. The thermography scan of an insulated pipe rack or vessel identifies suspicious zones from a safe distance – targeted conventional testing (UT) then confirms wall condition at these points.
